About Snap Theory
Snap Theory is an independent research site for NFL bettors who want evidence instead of hunches. You bring an idea; we show how it would actually have done against real closing lines, and how likely it is that the result was just luck.
What you can do here
- Check what a bet is worth: any spread, total, moneyline or teaser, with how often that exact bet has won, its fair price and what a half point is worth.
- See this week's lines checked: fair moneylines, key numbers and the teaser legs that have historically paid.
- Research player props with hit rates, game logs, fair odds, and how a player's numbers change when a teammate sits out.
- Backtest a betting rule on spreads, totals or moneylines since 1999, with a luck check on the result.
- Learn the basics: break-even rates, sample size, closing lines and more.
What we're not
- Not a sportsbook. You can't place bets here, and we don't link to sportsbooks or earn money when you bet.
- Not a picks service. We don't sell or promote picks. Every result is a historical test you can reproduce yourself.
- Not a promise. Past results don't guarantee future results. Most strategies that look profitable on paper don't hold up, and we try to make that obvious rather than hide it.
Our approach
- Real prices. Every bet is graded against the closing line and, where recorded, the actual closing odds. Why closing lines?
- The real bar. Results show the win rate you needed at those odds, not just whether you won more than half. Break-even explained.
- Honest statistics. A luck check on every backtest and a margin of error on every price check, because a small winning sample proves very little. Skill or luck?
- Fast and free. Backtests run on your own device, so results are instant, however many strategies you try.
Where the data comes from
Game results, closing spreads, totals and moneylines, and weekly player statistics come from the open-source nflverse project, covering every NFL season since 1999. The data updates automatically every day during the season.
How the site is funded
Snap Theory is free to use. It's supported by advertising, and we're building an optional Premium plan with deeper history and more filters. See what's planned. Advertising never affects the results you see.
